Your ROUGH OPENING should be 2" wider and 2" higher than the actual door size. For example, if you are installing a 30" wide by 80" high door, the rough opening should be 32" wide by 82" high.
STEP 1
- In front of the door opening, lay out the header and two jambs
- Nail or screw the jambs to the header to form the frame
- Use brad nailer with 2" brads OR pre-drill for 2" finishing nails or 1¼" flat head screws (not included)
See note below for reversible doors
STEP 2
- Place frame in door opening
- Shim the HINGE side making it perfectly plumb
- Secure by nailing through jamb & shim with 2" finishing nails (not included).
- It is best to nail in the centre of the jamb where the nails will later be covered by the door stop.
NOTE: If finished floor is NOT installed, it is important to raise the frame by the thickness of the floor. Do this by using shims underneath the jambs.
STEP 3
- Hang the door on the hinges.
- Shim the lock side jamb, making sure to keep a consistent gap between the door and the jamb.
- Nail the lock side jamb through the shims.
STEP 4
- Install your hardware and close the door.
- Install the colonial door stop, starting with the hinge side.
REVERSIBLE DOORS
If you have a reversible PRO-Hung door:
- The strike jamb will be machined on two sides
- For a right-hand door, use the side with a round hole
- For a lef-hand door, use the side with a rectangular hole
